What is a keloid?

A keloid is a type of thick scarring that occurs as a result of an overproduction of collagen during the healing process after an injury to the skin. When the skin experiences trauma, whether from cuts, surgery, or acne, the body repairs itself by producing collagen. In some individuals, this healing response is exaggerated, leading to the formation of a keloid, which extends beyond the original wound site and can be raised, thickened, and sometimes itch or feel uncomfortable.
